DIY ADJUSTABLE DOG RAMP WITH A FREE DOWNLOAD

DO YOU HAVE EXTRA TIME & LIMITED RESOURCES? PERHAPS YOUR CARPENTRY SKILL ARE QUESTIONABLE? GREAT! Join me and see how I made much needed ramp so that my tiny Dachshund friend could join his dog family on the people bed. We believe in equal opportunity bed enjoyment in our household. There was a lot of trial and error but the end result is a gorgeous, functional and collapsible dog ramp that will last for years. Below are the steps I took to build the ramp along with a video. You can watch Bauer using his new ramp. Plus a FREE download of the specs so you can make your own! I feel very proud to say that “I made it” and hope you feel empowered to do the same.

    • Cutting Mat
    • Straight Edge/Ruler
    • Staple Gun

PREP

Mark the side of the wood pieces that look the best
(You will want those for your outfacing surfaces)
Measure and mark all your cuts and drill holes

TIP!!!! When you make cuts and drill holes, have the best looking side of the wood facing up

MAKE CUTS

Use the circular saw or table saw to cut the plywood and 1×4 boards
The “arm” pieces will require the 13 5/8″ length to be ripped

DRILL HOLES

Drill all 3/4″ holes
Base Frame – Use a mitre saw or jigsaw to clear the angled slots so the dowels can to drop in completely
Drill pilot holes for screws in the 1x4s

SAND

Use a sander to smooth all the surfaces and edges
Take your time… this… takes… awhile
Use a file to smooth out the drill holes

ASSEMBLE THE BASE FRAME

Drive 6 screws into the side pieces to put the frame together
Add glue to the outside 28″ pieces and adhere to frame
(Make sure your outside pieces line up and the slots are facing down)
Attach clamps

ASSEMBLE THE TOP RAMP

You will need a second set of hands to help with this part
Add glue to the edge of the plywood’s longest sides
Attach the 40″ 1x4s to the plywood leaving a 1/2″ gap along the top
Drive 6 screws into 1x4s and plywood

ASSEMBLE THE SECTIONS TOGETHER

Place the ramp top on work table face down
Place base ramp face down into the ramp top
Align the drill holes
Insert the file and wiggle around to help further align the drill holes
Starting at the joint, place a 16.5″ dowel through the holes with a twisting motion (Use lubricating oil as needed)
Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the dowel in completely
Next place the other 16.5″ down into the top ramp and through the arms
Lastly place the 13.5″ dowel through the arms
Adjust the arms so that they are straight and evenly spaced
Remove the claps and flip over

OPTIONAL: YOGA MAT

Cut the yoga mat down to 15″ W (it is OK if it is a little wider) x 40″ L
Cut 2 stripes 1 1/2″ W x 28″ L for the frame base
Attach mat to ramp with staple gun

NOW IT IS TIME TO RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!! I hope you found this post helpful and you feel inspired to make your own. 🙂
