DIY DYED BLACK HEART PAJAMA PANTS

MAYBE YOU MISSED OUT ON THE VALENTINE PAJAMAS FOR SALE AT TARGET. MAYBE YOU CHOOSE TO CELEBRATE LOVE YOUR OWN WAY… in comfort and stylishly dark. I wanted to see what would happen if I hand dyed hearts onto my favorite brand of pajamas sold at Target stores. Brand: Stars Above – Blend: 95% Modal & 5% Spandex.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Craft Paper
  • Scissors
  • Gloves
  • Garment
  • Rit Liquid Black Dye
  • Hot Hot Hot Water
  • Salt
  • Paper Towels
  • Spray Bottles
  • Brushes
  • Metal Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Iron
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative
  • Heat Gun or Blow Dryer

PREP

Cover your work surface with craft paper or plastic

Cut craft paper inserts to protect against the dye bleeding from the front to back of your pants

Insert the paper into your garment

“PAINT” ON HEARTS

Mix 2 tbsp dye, 1/2 tsp salt & 1/2 cup very hot water into a metal bowl

Fill a spray bottle with very hot water
Wrap with a towel to make handling easier

Paint on your black hearts onto dry fabric

I started with a thinner brush and built up the thickness of my hearts with a thicker brush. I played with size and angles. Some were left open in the center while others were filled.

Spray the fabric with a little bit of hot water to encourage bleeding, but not too much or your hearts will lose their shape

Feel free to splatter and drip dye to give them a punk rock, graffiti feel

OPTIONAL: TISSUE PAPER TYE HEARTS

Check out the process here

Apply the tissue paper hearts
If the paper is not bleeding enough, spray on a little more water

In hindsight I would have skipped this step as the tissue paper dye does not last one wash on this modal fabric blend.

REAPPLY BLACK HEARTS

After leaving the first pass of black dye to sit for about an hour, reapply a second coat

Spray with a little bit of hot water to help set the dye

Let dry for an additional 30 minutes

HOT STEAM IRON

Cover surface with paper towels

Run hot iron over your garment

Spray with a little bit of hot water to help set the dye

COLORSTAY DYE FIXATIVE

Pour some Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative into a spray bottle

Liberally spray over dyed areas

It reduces bleeding, fading and
even enhances the color of your project.

Set with heat – sun, blow dryer or heat gun

FLIP OVER AND REPEAT ON OTHER SIDE

Once done, hang dry

Wash in warm water with a mild detergent and rinse, or run through a gentle machine wash cycle

Tumble dry on low or hang dry

Now you are ready to rock your custom created Valentine (or anytime) black heart pjs!
