PREP THE COCONUT

Check out the process here

I like to use white coconuts for the birds body and brown coconuts for the beak. If you want to use a white or brown coconut for the entire bird, that is fine also. Either way the beak gets coated in stain or paint, so can just use whatever color coconut you prefer.

Cut off two sections of coconut – a larger slice for the body and a smaller section for the head. When choosing where to cut, be mindful of the seam lines. Also areas that have a nice bump, opposed to flatters areas, make for a more full form.

To make the pieces fit snugly together, gently cut off a section at the base of the head with a mini hack saw

For the  beak, you can either cut another smaller section off or sand an portion of the head section all the way down, completely removing any fibers, to create a “beak.” Both options work great! See pics below.

COCONUT BIRD ASSEMBLY

Gently sand off the fibers in the eye area to make it easier to apply paint
Sand the beak area (or separate beak piece) down to brown shell completely removing any fibers
Wipe the beak clean & apply stain or paint with a cloth or brush
(I applied a teak colored wood stain)
If the beak is a separate piece, hot glue it to the head
Paint on eyes and other details as desired

Liberally apply hot glue to attach the head to the body
Hot glue the wood skewer to the back of the shell pieces to create support
(Optional – drill a hole in body for skewer to go through)
Hot glue the “tail” palm frond to the lower body
Hot glue the “wing” and “head feather” palm fronds onto the form

ARRANGE & ASSEMBLE

Place the floral hoop over the bird tail
Place the bamboo perch on top onto of floral hoop
Add hot glue under the bamboo perch and on the bird tail area to bind the bird and the perch together
Bind the bamboo perch to the floral ring by wrapping the ends with twine
Start arranging all the remaining items (florals, shells, etc) and hot glue them into place
Wrap a piece of twine at the top of the floral hoop and make a looped knot to hang the completed wreath from
